Product Detective is a mobile application that analyzes the labels of food and cosmetic products to provide ingredient analysis. We respect your privacy and take all necessary measures to protect your data. This policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and your rights.

Camera Usage
Our application requests access to your device's camera to scan food and cosmetic products. The camera is only activated when you press the "Show Product" button. Captured images:
- Are sent to our server for ingredient analysis
- Undergo text extraction (OCR) processing
- Are not stored on the server; only text data is processed
Data Processing and Third-Party Services
Our application uses the following third-party services:
OpenAI Vision API:
- Label images are sent to OpenAI servers via encrypted connection for text extraction (OCR)
- OpenAI may retain API requests for up to 30 days for security purposes (subject to OpenAI's privacy policy)
- Images are not stored on our servers
- Your personally identifiable information (name, email) is not shared
Open Food Facts API (Food Products):
- An open-source database is used to verify food product information
- This is a free, community-driven project
- No personal data is shared; only product barcodes/names are queried
Open Beauty Facts API (Cosmetic Products):
- An open-source database is used for INCI ingredients of cosmetic and personal care products
- This is the cosmetic-focused sister project of Open Food Facts
- Both APIs are queried in parallel (the best result is used)
Product Database and Caching
To improve the user experience, scanned product information is stored in our database and shared among all users:
- Product name, brand, and ingredient list (text extracted via OCR) are stored
- Detected additives and analysis results are stored
- Data older than 90 days is re-analyzed (freshness check)
- Other users scanning the same product receive instant results from this cache (shared cache)
- Your photos or images are not stored on our server
- The stored data belongs to the product and does not contain personal user data
Reason for storage: To improve service quality and provide fast results for repeated scans (legitimate interest).
On-Device Data
Some data is stored locally on your device:
- Scan history: Your scans from the last 2 hours (timestamped)
- Favorite products: Your saved product list
- This data remains only on your device
- It is permanently deleted when you uninstall the app
Security
We take the following measures to ensure the security of your data:
- HTTPS/TLS encryption protocols are used
- A minimum data collection principle is applied
- Personally identifiable information such as name, email, and location is not collected
- User tracking is not performed

Data Transfers
Your data may be transferred abroad in the following cases:
- To servers in the USA for OpenAI Vision API usage (under standard contractual clauses)
- For Open Food Facts / Open Beauty Facts APIs (open-source projects)
These transfers are protected by security measures under GDPR.

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. You will be notified within the app when significant changes are made. Continuing to use the app means you accept the updated policy.
